Geoffrey Hinton, known as<\/strong> the \u201cgodfather of AI,\u201d fears the technology he helped build<\/strong> could wipe out<\/strong> humanity \u2014 and the tech industry is taking<\/strong> the wrong approach <\/strong>to stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hinton, a Nobel Prize<\/strong>–winning <\/strong>computer scientist and a former Google executive<\/strong>,
has warned in the past that there is a 10% to 20% chance <\/strong>that AI wipes out humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, he expressed doubts about<\/strong> how tech companies are trying to ensure
humans remain \u201cdominant<\/strong>\u201d over \u201csubmissive<\/strong>\u201d AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not going to work. They\u2019re going to be much smarter than us. They\u2019re going to
have all sorts of ways to get around that<\/strong>,\u201d Hinton said at Ai4, an industry conference
in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year has already seen examples of AI systems willing to deceive,<\/strong> cheat and steal to achieve their goals. For example, to avoid being replaced, one AI model tried to blackmail<\/strong> an engineer about an affair <\/strong>it learned about in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of forcing AI to submit to <\/strong>humans, Hinton presented <\/strong>an intriguing <\/strong>solution:
building <\/strong>\u201cmaternal instincts<\/strong>\u201d into <\/strong>AI models, so \u201cthey really care about people\u201d even
once the technology becomes more powerful and smarter than humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hinton said it\u2019s not clear to him exactly how that can be done technically but stressed<\/strong>
it\u2019s critical researchers work on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hinton is known for<\/strong> his pioneering work <\/strong>on neural networks<\/strong>, which helped pave the
way <\/strong>to today\u2019s AI boom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, he stepped down from<\/strong> Google and started speaking out about <\/strong>the dangers of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
